A Quality Inspector's Story: Chemical Guys, RV Sun Shades, and Why Cheap Costs More
Something felt wrong before I even opened the box.
The weight was off. Not by much—maybe a couple of pounds. But when you've handled as many RV sun shade shipments as I have over four years, your hands notice things before your eyes do.
I cut the tape, pulled out the first unit, and flexed the frame clip. It snapped on the third bend.
That was the start of a two-week saga that taught an RV rental company—and reminded me—why the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest purchase.
The order that kicked it off
I'm a quality and compliance manager at a company that supplies car care products and shop equipment to businesses. I review every product batch before it reaches customers. Roughly 200+ line items a year. I've rejected about 12% of first deliveries in the past two years due to spec mismatches, missing paperwork, or outright defects.

The sun shade batch: where it all went sideways
Now, the sun shades.
The client had sourced these themselves. Fine by me—happens all the time. They found a supplier offering sun shade screens at 18% below what we'd quoted for the equivalent spec. Here's the thing about claims like that: under FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), specific performance claims need substantiation. '99% UV blockage' is a precise claim. If the supplier can't back it up with lab results, it's not a claim—it's a guess. And I'm not putting a guess on the windshield of a rental RV in the Arizona sun.
The client wasn't thrilled. They'd already told their locations the shades were on the way. But I held the batch. We ended up going back to our original supplier for the correct spec, and the client had to wait an extra week. The 'savings' turned into a delay and a second round of shipping.
Six weeks later, the owner called me. The cheaper supplier they'd used previously had just processed two warranty claims for the exact same clip failure on a different vehicle type. The shades we sourced for them? Zero returns. The Bauer vs Hercules impact wrench test
While the sun shade situation was playing out, the client's maintenance foreman asked for our take on impact wrenches. The mechanics were split between Bauer and Hercules. Both are well-known names in the mid-range tool market. But the foreman wanted data, not opinions.
So we set up a comparison. Two 1/2-inch drive impact wrenches, same battery tier, same torque meter, same set of lug nuts. I've done this kinda test a dozen times. It's not rocket science. It's about consistency.
What we found:

The JLG ES1932 scissor lift: a paperwork scare
The last item on the order was the JLG ES1932 scissor lift. Also the most expensive single line item. Nineteen-foot working height, electric, compact footprint. Perfect for a maintenance bay.
The lift arrived on schedule. Visually, everything looked right. Serial number checked out. Platform dimensions matched. But the load test certificate was missing from the documentation bundle.
Is a missing certificate a big deal? It can be. You don't put a 19-foot scissor lift into service without verified inspection records. The load test cert proves the lift has passed the manufacturer's rated capacity check. It's a safety document, not a formality. Industry practice says equipment doesn't go on the shop floor without it.
I flagged it, and we waited two days for the dealer to email the certificate. Turned out to be an internal mix-up—the lift itself was fine. But those two days were a reminder: the most expensive piece of equipment deserves the same scrutiny as a $12 accessory. Actually, more.
And honestly, this was the third time in two years that I'd seen a missing certificate hold up a shipment. I finally made a standard pre-shipment documentation checklist. Should have done it after the first time.
What I'd tell any buyer
Looking back at that order, three lessons stick with me.
First, the lowest quote is not the lowest cost. The client saved $650 on sun shades and spent it back in delays, stress, and a week of schedule disruption. That's a real cost, even if it doesn't show up on an invoice.
Second, 'budget' and 'value' are different words. The Chemical Guys Mr. Pink was mid-priced and flawless. The Hercules cost more than the Bauer and was worth every cent of the difference. The cheap option wasn't the bargainer's friend in either case.
Third, proof matters as much as product. The JLG scissor lift was perfect in every physical way, but the missing certificate stopped the process cold. It's not enough for something to be right. It has to be provably right.
People ask me all the time: 'What's the best product?' My answer is always the same. The best product is the one that meets your spec, comes from a supplier who can prove it, and doesn't create problems after the invoice is paid.
Price is what you pay. Value is what you get. After four years of inspecting other people's purchases, I can tell you: those two numbers are rarely the same.
